Hearing the words, “Your child has autism,” can be one of the most emotional and pivotal moments in a parent’s life. Whether you had a feeling something was different, or the diagnosis came out of the blue, it’s completely natural to feel a mix of emotions—uncertainty, grief, relief, hope, and most of all, a deep desire to support your child’s future.
And then the big question hits:
Where do we even begin?
With so much information available—online articles, social media opinions, advice from friends and family—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. What works for one child might not work for another, and when you’re just getting started, it can feel like navigating in the dark.
That’s where we come in.
At Bridge Kids Behaviour Consulting, we’re here to walk beside you with understanding, not judgment—and with a step-by-step plan that focuses on your child’s unique needs and strengths. One of the most effective tools we use is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy—a research-backed, compassionate, and individualized approach to supporting children with autism and other developmental needs.
Let’s walk through what this journey might look like, together.

Step 1: Getting to Know Your Child Through a Behaviour Consultation
The first step in creating meaningful progress is simple: get to know your child well—not just what challenges they face, but who they are. That’s the heart of a behaviour consultation. It isn’t a quick questionnaire or one-time meeting. It’s a thoughtful process where our behavior consultant take the time to learn about your child in context—at home, during play, in everyday routines, and through observation and collaboration with you.
Here’s how it works:
Initial parent meeting: We start by talking with you. We want to hear your story, understand your concerns, learn what makes your child smile, and where things feel tough. We also ask about your child’s daily routines, communication style, behaviors, and preferences.
Direct observation: Our behaviour consultant will spend time observing your child in familiar settings, whether that’s at home, in the community, or a center. We look at how they respond to instructions, how they play, how they react to change or sensory input, and how they interact with others.
Comprehensive assessment: We assess both strengths and areas of need, using structured tools and informal interactions. We explore the why behind behaviours—what triggers them, what motivates your child, and how they currently express themselves.
Personalized behaviour plan: From there, we craft a tailored behaviour intervention plan that outlines goals, strategies, and techniques specifically designed for your child. This plan is completely individualized because every child deserves support that fits who they are.
Parent coaching: Perhaps most importantly, we equip you with practical, easy-to-apply tools and strategies you can start using right away. You’re not just watching from the sidelines—you’re an essential part of your child’s progress.
Our goal? To help your child feel understood, supported, and empowered—while giving your whole family the guidance you need to feel confident and connected along the way.
Step 2: Building Real-Life Skills with 1:1 Behavior Intervention
After creating a personalized plan, we move into 1:1 behavior intervention—the hands-on stage where your child works directly with a behavior interventionist to practice and strengthen important life skills.
These sessions are tailored to your child’s learning style and goals. They’re structured, supportive, and filled with opportunities to build communication, emotional regulation, social skills, and daily living routines.
We offer two types of 1:1 intervention, and both are designed to meet your child where they’re most comfortable:
Home-Based Intervention:
Home-based therapy is ideal for younger children or those who thrive in familiar surroundings. Since therapy takes place right in your home, everyday routines become meaningful teaching opportunities.
Whether it’s washing hands, using the toilet, sitting for meals, or getting dressed, the learning is built into real life. Behaviour Interventionist work with your child to practice these skills in context, making progress feel natural and achievable.
Parents play an active role—observing, practicing strategies, and continuing the learning long after the session ends. This consistency leads to stronger outcomes and a greater sense of confidence for the whole family.
Center-Based Intervention:
For older children—or those ready for more structure—center-based therapy offers a school-like environment filled with social, academic, and behavioral learning opportunities.
Children learn to follow group instructions, navigate transitions, communicate with peers, and build resilience using visual aids, sensory tools, and guided support.
It’s the perfect space for practicing skills in a structured, predictable setting while gaining exposure to classroom routines and peer interaction—essential for preparing for school and community life.
Step 3: The Playdate Program – Building Skills Through Play
After your child begins making progress in 1:1 sessions, the next step is helping them use those skills in social settings. But we know that jumping straight into a group program can feel like a lot—for both kids and parents. That’s why we developed the Playdate Program.
This unique transitional program is built on something simple but powerful: play is a child’s natural motivation. By tapping into the joy and curiosity of play, we help children practice important social and communication skills in a way that feels fun—not forced.
Each playdate session includes:
Small-group, play-based activities
Guided peer interactions and turn-taking
Simple group routines and expectations
Support in managing sensory input and social cues
With just a few children in each session, we create a safe space where your child can build confidence, explore friendships, and take the first steps toward group learning—with plenty of support and encouragement every step of the way.
Step 4: Social Group Programs – Learning to Thrive Together
Once your child is ready, they can move into our Social Group Programs—the next big leap in developing social confidence and life readiness.
These programs are more than just “group time.” They’re carefully structured environments where children learn how to function as part of a group, express themselves, collaborate with peers, and build independence.
We understand that social learning is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why we offer nine unique social group programs, each one tailored to a different developmental stage. Rather than sorting by age alone, we assess each child’s skill level, communication ability, emotional regulation, and cognitive readiness to place them in the right group.
Here’s what that looks like:
Early learners may work on skills like sharing, following simple group instructions, using visual schedules, and identifying emotions.
Primary-level groups dive into teamwork, conversation skills, problem-solving, and advocating for needs.
Intermediate and high school groups expand into real-world readiness—building friendships, resolving social conflicts, preparing for job interviews, handling money, and navigating community settings.
Each group follows a structured routine and includes a blend of guided learning, creative expression, hands-on activities, and peer collaboration. Whether it’s circle time, snack sharing, group games, or role-play, every moment is a learning opportunity wrapped in fun and encouragement.
With caring staff, peer support, and developmentally appropriate challenges, children in our social groups don’t just learn—they grow. They begin to see themselves as part of a community. They start to believe they belong.
