BC vs. BI

What Is the Difference Between a Behaviour Consultant and a BI?

In the world of Behaviour intervention and behavioural support, families and new team members often hear terms like "Behaviour Consultant" and "BI" (Behaviour Interventionist). While both roles work closely together toward the same goals, they carry very different responsibilities, training requirements, and day-to-day focuses.

Understanding the distinction between these two roles can help clarify how intervention teams operate and how comprehensive support is delivered.

The Behaviour Consultant: The Analyst and Planner

A Behaviour Consultant (often holding professional credentials such as a RASP-A designation in British Columbia or BCBA, primary in North America) acts as the clinical lead and designer of the intervention program.

Their primary role is to assess, plan, and oversee intervention sessions. Rather than running every daily session, the consultant focuses on the big picture.

Key responsibilities of a Behaviour Consultant include:

  • Conducting initial and ongoing functional behaviour assessments

  • Designing individualized treatment plans, goals, and behaviour intervention strategies

  • Analyzing data to monitor client progress and make data-driven adjustments

  • Training and supervising Behaviour Interventionists and parents

  • Ensuring intervention practices align with ethical guidelines and professional standards

Think of the Behaviour Consultant as the architect: they evaluate the terrain, draw up the blueprint, and ensure the structure is built safely and effectively.

The Behaviour Interventionist (BI): The Implementer and Coach/Teacher

A Behaviour Interventionist (BI) is the frontline professional who works directly with the child and family, putting the intervention plan into active practice.

While consultants design the program, BIs bring it to life during daily sessions. They implement structured teaching procedures, manage target behaviours using positive reinforcement, and record detailed session data.

Key responsibilities of a Behaviour Interventionist include:

  • Executing specific teaching targets (such as discrete trial training, natural environment teaching, or social skill programs)

  • Collecting accurate, objective data during every session

  • Implementing proactive behaviour support plans and crisis management strategies

  • Building rapport and facilitating positive social interactions

  • Collaborating closely with consultants and families to ensure consistency

Think of the BI as the master builder and coach: they work hand in hand with the child day to day, building skills through repetition, reinforcement, and direct engagement.

How They Work Together as a Team

Neither role functions effectively in isolation. Great behavioural intervention relies on a continuous feedback loop between the two:

  1. Assessment & Design: The Behaviour Consultant assesses needs and designs the curriculum.

  2. Implementation & Data Collection: The BI runs the program and tracks how the child responds.

  3. Review & Refinement: The consultant reviews the BI's data during regular supervision sessions, refining targets as the child masters new skills.

This collaborative structure keeps therapy dynamic, evidence-based, and tailored to the child's evolving needs.

Final Thoughts

Both Behaviour Consultants and Behaviour Interventionists play vital, complementary roles in supporting children and families. Consultants provide the clinical direction and framework, while BIs provide the direct, consistent engagement that turns strategies into real-world skills.

By understanding what each role brings to the table, families and support teams can collaborate more effectively, ensuring every child receives structured, compassionate, and high-quality care.

Teamwork turns a plan on paper into meaningful, lasting growth.
